What is ‘Livability’?
Livable cities exhibit the following characteristics
- Balances economic growth with environmental sustainability.
- Promotes accessible, attractive parks and public spaces for recreation and community interaction.
- Promotes use of non-motorized forms of transportation.
- Highlights unique aspects of community character and instills community pride.
- Integrates sustainable green building practices with respect for historic architecture.
- Employs green infrastructure practices to beautify, cool the city and conserve energy.
- Supports neighborhoods and community building efforts.
- Cultivates local businesses and local food sources.
- Allows people of all income classes to be part of a community.
- Promotes respect, fairness and consideration of all people.
The Livability Approach
- Is a holistic approach to community vitality — focusing on the synergistic impacts and interrelatedness of many distinct “silos” (traffic flow, parks, housing, safety, air quality).
- The primary customer is the individual who lives/works/plays in the community. Understanding their needs and wants is essential to enhancing livability.
- Is an “equal opportunity” approach that improves the lives of all regardless of economic strata, ethnicity, religion, orientation, political party.
- Requires interdisciplinary collaboration across all sectors (nonprofit, government, for-profit).
- Celebrates the unique characteristics of PLACE in a positive manner and works to build from the “unique DNA” of the community.
